Circus Amok Jugglers by David Shankbone, New Y...

The day that the carnival,

came to my town,

there was drama, emotion,

excitement  all round.

Japes were a plenty,

with high jinx of the clowns;

the day that the carnival,

came to this town.

The daring and danger,

of walking the rope,

and the jugglers’ juggling,

all gave us hope.

Next came the horses,

they preened and they pranced,

as the acrobats tumbled,

and the dancers they danced.

Then there were daggers,

as the men threw their knives,

with glinting steel edges,

as sharp as fish wives.

The fire eaters swallowed,

flames hotter than hell,

whilst the ringmaster hollered,

and the kids they did yell.

Welcome to my world,

it won’t let you down,

when the metaphorical carnival,

visits your town.

My idea of paradise,

when I don’t set,

my clock at night;

and in my bed,

in peaceful slumber,

where dreams of you,

my woes outnumbered.

The duvet clings,

as lover’s arms;

the pillow talks,

with all its charm.

Nought shall wake,

this blissful state,

as no alarm,

can make me late.

I’m in a dilemma –

Oh what should I do?

Why is it just me,

that this happens to?

I’m in my posh frock,

peng from head to my toes.

There is just one problem,

the spot on my nose!

It glows like a beacon,

landing the planes,

I really can’t squeeze it,

‘cos I can’t bear the pain!

There’s only one option –

one thing I can do,

hide under my duvet,

and eat a chocolate or two!

Did I spy a secret,

in the corner of your eye?

If you were to tell me,

would it make me cry?

Do you think it’s worth it,

to keep up this charade?

Life is complicated,

why make it so hard?

Would it not be better,

to go our separate ways?

To accept that it’s all over,

and fight another day.

You rang m'lord

You rush on by,

in your pinstripe suit;

look down on me,

nose, cock-a-snoot.

Do you know,

who I really am?

I am richer,

than any man.

You may have millions,

stashed away,

some off-shore bank,

for a rainy day.

But take a look,

closely examine,

open up you heart,

what lies within?

I may not have money,

to match your wealth,

but I do have love,

and that’s something else!

For all your riches,

stocks and shares,

I live my life,

with no worries, or cares.

You really are quite rude!

It is beyond the pale,

that all you do is bitch, and moan,

and rant to me, and wail!

Yet, I am quite astounded,

you never seem to learn,

you beg and plead,

for my advice…

then do what your heart yearns.

You never seem to listen,

to anything that’s said,

we swirl around,

the same merry-go-round,

you hurt my dizzy head!

For all these years I’ve known you,

I’ve come to realise,

you’re simply just,

a drama Queen,

with selfishness your vice!

I’m whacked out on sugar,

my mood it is high,

I’m giddy and playful,

just look at me fly!

No need to worry,

I’m prepared for the crash,

I have foamy bananas,

in my secret stash!

Motorway driving

lights whip by

wipers wiping

mists spray high

Visibility low

concentration high

cheek by jowl

lorries flash by

Black night darkness

heavy in heart

low visibility

from the start

Cat’s eyes visionary

unnoticed by day

celestial markers

guiding the way

Motorway driving

a challenging night

homeward I’m bound

destination in sight

How can you live,

and never question,

stories concocted,

by media suggestion?

I struggle to see,

how this is right,

an injured world,

can’t sleep at night.

Journalists quick,

to make a buck,

from someone’s misfortunes,

or tragic bad luck.

Magazine trash,

knows the score,

dishing out scandal,

Lies, misery, and more.

Governments depict,

skewed stories suspect,

maintain and inflame,

continued conflict.

All life is precious,

for us to squander,

time and energy,

on false propaganda.

Step like fairies,

tread the air,

footsteps fine,

like no one’s there.

Cherish earth,

don’t stamp her down,

gentle steps,

caress the ground.

Pity creatures,

underfoot,

do not squash them –

Elephant!

Practice lightly,

as you walk,

silently,

your footsteps talk.
