Sunrise over Stonehenge on the summer solstice...

Where did January go?

Bleak stormed nights

shrouded in snow

February breezed in

without a hello

wearing cloak of frost

and refused to go

until marched out

by the April fools

who cast a clout

breaking all the rules

then come what may

June soon came

and played her part

to warm the heart

of birds and bees

and summer

trees

Don’t cry, said Alice,

it’s all a game,

life and death,

it’s all the same.

Don’t be fooled,

it’s all illusion,

don’t believe,

your own delusion.

Look in the mirror,

what do you see?

a collection of habits,

that I call, ‘Me’.

Step through the mirror,

beyond the girl,

and look into,

another world.

Experience,

is one third true,

but only for,

the reflected you.

So don’t believe,

all that you feel,

the crux of life –

nothing is real.

So, White Rabbit,

I would say,

there is no point,

to run away…

and Hatter, dear,

we’re all quite mad,

pour the tea,

and don’t be sad.

Broken Reflection

Shhh, don’t tell

don’t let on

that you’re in hell

hush now

Your lips are pursed

don’t tell the doctor

or the nurse

eyes down

What lurks within

can’t be without

masked by a grin

and bear it

So well hidden

the mortal sin

guilt well ridden

(Angels don’t sing)

The mask of norm

slips on by

distorts the form

stiff upper lip

Word to the wise

soured apple

of your eyes

windowless soul

Darkness falls

eclipses all

no voice can call

chin up

The Irresponsible Lotus

The irresponsible lotus,

refused to flourish or bloom,

stuck his head

right in the mud,

and waited,

for monsoon.

He wallowed and protested,

Ostrich like – he did!

Regressed, decayed, and festered,

in ignorance he hid.

‘til one day came the sunshine,

of which he couldn’t ignore,

it beamed on him,

and warmed him,

and coaxed him from the floor.

He lifted up his stubborn head,

with squinting dusty eyes,

he blinked and stretched,

and relished it,

he felt so quite alive!

The rays of warm compassion,

a catalyst did start,

the more he grew,

the more he knew,

this was meant to be.

He blossomed and he opened,

his waxy tight bud heart,

he raised his head,

toward the sky,

and it set himself apart.

No longer dwelling,

in the mud,

irresponsibly –

the sun shone strong,

and so did he,

for all around to see.

His radiance and his beauty,

apparent majesty,

admired by all who saw him,

brought calm and clarity.

The moral of this story,

may be plain to all,

of the irresponsible lotus,

who answered nature’s call.

Please never judge a lotus,

that may be stuck in mud,

it just needs a little sunshine,

to coax open,

its heart bud.

I’m at the station,

feeling impatient,

wanting to get on my way.

Announcement says,

there’s been delays,

engineering works causing affray.

The platform’s changed,

I’m turning deranged,

as I sprint to platform eight.

I just catch my train,

(these connections a pain)

we finally get on our way.

A seat on my own,

I pull out my tome,

absorbed in a classic romance.

‘til the people alight,

someone sits by my side,

with ipod and ears plugged in.

I huff and I puff,

at the jangly stuff,

a tinny annoying old din.

Mr Darcy must wait,

as distracted, I hate

to gaze through the window instead.

I seethe and I fume,

unintelligible tunes,

wishing their batteries were dead!

What a lovely write up – thank you 🙂

dagdapublishing's avatarDagda Publishing

As she whispers to herself,
her shouts become shadows,
and heartbeats chime thirteen;
the pain in her chest is not surpassed,
by the memory, of just before midnight.
Why did she stay? When all about said,
run, flee, escape, (or) you’ll rue the day.
Holding a bouquet of disdain,
she will mourn the bride,
and hide the pain.

*****

In today’s featured poem, Alex brings us into a world where the fairytale has soured. Utilising the story of Cinderella, Alex paints a poignant picture of rejection, loneliness and regret. Brief in it’s construction, but long in it’s scope, this is a poem that is very easy for the reader to identify with if they have ever experienced loss, pain and rejection (and many of us have). A truly delightful and accomplished piece from this Sheffield poet.

Silence

Not a word,

not a word,

you do not grace me,

within, without,

I wait,

I wait,

with sullen pout.

My fate,

my fate,

How can it be?

So silently;

you give me,

not a thought,

not a thought.
