Full Moon over Margarita

I know my flaws,

so, hold your tongue,

do not hector,

at my wrongs.

I am aware,

my gentle meekness,

can be mistook,

as greatest weakness.

Peck at me,

just like a worm,

but watch your back,

as tables turn.

What you give out,

receive thrice fold,

this old folk lore,

has been foretold.

Spider on the ceiling,

I wonder how you’re feeling,

is the world

down-side up for you,

and tell me are you reeling?

‘Tipping Sheep (the right way)’ is the first anthology from new author Alexandra Carr-Malcolm. This is an intriguing compilation of poems, spanning over a ten year period of collected works. ‘Tipping Sheep’ will take you on a journey of highs and lows, exploring life, death, and many aspects of the human predicament. From the depths of ‘Bittersweet’ despair, to the humour of ‘Tipping Sheep’ and the musing of ‘Knitting Couplets’. Alex has a unique style of word play and…

I wonder if you think of me

and of things we used to do,

of all the times we laughed and cried;

this is my last love song to you.

I wanted to hold your heart someday

and stroll on sunset shores,

I’ve dreamed of resting in your arms,

whilst watching shooting stars.

It feels much like a lifetime,

that I’ve waited ‘round for you;

I’ve hung on every meagre word,

with tear stained eyes wet through.

You’ve held my heart within a vice

of neglect and nonchalance,

I’ve watched you from a distance,

did you think of me – just once?

I’m moving on and leaving you

back in the past where you should be,

this is my very last love song,

to a distant, cautious memory.

You’re not a man of mystery,

a lover, nor a friend,

you have no right to break my heart,

but I’ll love you ‘til the end.

I’m in a tangle

I’m in a muddle

I have two poems

mixed up in a fuddle

I cannot part them

I try but they don’t

I tease and I prune

they simply just won’t

I’ve tried all that I can

I admit that alas

they’re conjoined forever

they’re really stuck fast

When you sipped champagne,

to celebrate the slipping of your life,

what did I have?

He was a chancer,

Romancer,

much the same as you.

I did it on my own,

no help,

no love,

Just me,

and a will to survive,

to feel alive,

and to hope.

Sometimes,

all we have,

is

hope.

Un-Love Poem

An un-love poem isn’t a poem of hate, exactly — that might be a bit too shrill or boring. It’s more like a poem of sarcastic dislike. This is a good time to get in a good dig at people who chew with their mouth open, or always take the last oreo. If there’s no person you feel comfortable un-loving, maybe there’s a phenomenon? Like squirrels that eat your tomatoes.

I love thee,

as the dog loves the flea,

as the horse loves the tick,

you make me sick!

Today’s  challenge is to write a tanka. This, like the “American” cinquain, is a poem based on syllables, with the pattern being 5-7-5-7-7. They work best when those final two 7-syllable lines contain a sort of turn or surprise that the first three lines might not wholly anticipate. You can string a bunch of them together to make a multi-stanza poem, or just write one!

Gazing in your eyes,

memories softly playing,

gently I whisper,

you have the key to my heart,

alas… I have changed the locks.

The pantun is a traditional Malay form, a style of which was later adapted into French and then English as the pantoum. A pantun consists of rhymed quatrains (abab), with 8-12 syllables per line. The first two lines of each quatrain aren’t meant to have a formal, logical link to the second two lines, although the two halves of each quatrain are supposed to have an imaginative or imagistic connection.

English: A snowdrop. Svenska: En snödroppe.

I love you

but I let you go

I see through

the winter’s snow
