Orphan

When you were wrenched
from me by Death,
the unceasing rain drenched
my very being;
the nights of winds wild,
unsettled my soul.
No longer a child,
your heart left a whole.
Dreams half formed and turbid,
barbed and bound with
memories coherent and vivid,
reliving the dying embers of life,
orphaned words held hostage
to overwhelming inadequacies.
Reviling flames of rage,
and the significance of
the underlying situation;
a futile recreation.

His pint glass half empty,

he’s nursing the blues;

always bitter, never mild,

flat cap and scuffed shoes.

She hoovers the house,

with stars in her hair,

sings to her muse,

thanks god he’s not there.

As he sits in the pub,

nursing his woes,

the footy is lost,

as the last whistle blows.

In her Primarni dress,

she scrubs hard the floor,

heart in her mouth,

dreads the key in the door.

He shuffles on home,

with her heart in his boots,

a belly of beer,

and a loin full of fruit.

She accepts his gift,

with the grace of a Queen,

a necklace of violets,

blacks, blues, and greens.

He broods and he dreams,

cultivating his grudge;

she’s stolen his youth,

this old, plain, drudge.

She lies stock-still

as the stars in the air.

He can no longer hurt,

what is no longer there.

Miss Eileen Leckonby Hall,

it’s like you never left at all,

with brass plaque small,

upon your bench,

stating Miss Eileen Leckonby Hall.

Miss Eileen Leckonby Hall,

I never met you at all,

but in my mind,

you were gentle and kind,

and enjoyed the flowers,

that climbed the wall.

Miss Eileen Leckonby Hall,

did you hear the birds that called,

enjoy the butterflies at play,

watch the sunset every day,

as I’m seated on your bench,

it’s like you never left at all.

Miss Eileen Leckonby Hall,

it’s like you never left at all,

a small brass plaque bears your name,

upon that seat that once cradled your frame,

the song thrush calls for you again,

Miss Eileen Leckonby Hall.

Miss Eileen Leckonby Hall,

and though your name in letters small,

your memory will still remain,

through winter snows and summer rain,

as I sit upon your chair,

Miss Eileen Leckonby Hall.

and she sits waiting

watching the world

and she sits waiting

nobody’s girl

passers-by pass her by

crying inside

and she sits waiting

unnoticed

onlookers look on

dying inside

and she sits waiting

overlooked

Sight seers don’t see her

as she looks over

and she sits waiting

unseen

and she sits waiting

watching the world

and she sits waiting

nobody’s girl

Big Pants

A lady of a certain age,

adjusts her wardrobe,

to engage.

According to her needs;

to please her comport,

and ease discomfort.

That’s why I am,

wearing big pants today;

in order that I can,

Keep warm my back,

and show no crack –

the days long gone,

of scanty clad,

and frilly frills,

dressed to thrill,

send passionate pulses

palpitating – No!

I’m wearing big pants today,

and – just in case…

Of what, I know not,

I’ve packed two extra pairs!

How I wish,

you were around,

to keep my feet,

upon this ground,

to clip my wings,

and whisper this…

Life’s a play –

protagonist,

don’t give up,

and don’t give in,

it’s just a game,

that no one wins.

The Other Side of Me

Punch and Judy's Carribean Vacation

Do you know,

the other side of me?

Where the grass is greener,

and the soul is darker.

Do you know only,

my second face?

Not like the rest,

the one I keep for best.

Do you know,

if this is sunny side up

heads up, tales down,

turn that frown

upside down?

I think you know,

Little Miss Sunshine,

but have you met Judy

within or without?

Do you know,

the essence of me?

Not that of vanilla,

of sugar and spice,

but one of fear.

Do you know,

the other side of me?

Where the grass is greener,

and the soul is darker.

Being Vivien

She was a terrier of a woman,

sharp and quick;

just a bit shabby around the edges.

Always practical,

not fashionable,

but more than capable.

She wanted to be Vivien Leigh,

and in her head,

she was…

the mirror says different,

but her eyes are kind.

Make do and mend,

scuffed shoes,

and split ends,

overlooked,

a drab wall-

flower

but her eyes,

are kind…
