Hello! Firstly I would like to say – Good luck to all poets taking up the NaPoWriMo challenge. I will do my best to keep up!

You may have noticed that I have been quiet for some time, I have been ill for a few months now – thankfully I am on the mend and hope to be a little more present. Some of the poems to be featured in napowrimo16 are vintage. I have not been writing as much due to my illness. Hopefully napowrimo will inspire me into action!

Below is my first one for the event, it is an oldie but it hasn’t been blogged before 🙂 In the upcoming days, hopefully I will be able to upload some clips of me reading at the Sheffield poem-a-thon event 🙂 Happy writing and reading!  Alex x

Valentine

You see an old man,

whereas I see the boy,

I see a lover,

all timid and coy.

You see grey hair,

where I still see curls,

the envy of all

the popular girls.

You see a paunch,

I see tall, lithe, and swarthy,

a blush to the cheek,

you considered me worthy.

You see an old fool,

well maybe that’s true,

after all these years,

I still love you.

Tick tock, tick tock,

my mother’s watch,

upon my arm,

tick tock, tick tock.

It shouldn’t be here,

it should be there,

I have her face,

I have her hair,

tick tock, tick tock.

The time flies by,

I grieve each day,

bequeathed to me,

time slips away,

tick tock, tick tock.

I smell the strap,

for scent of her,

but ‘tis long gone,

no trace is there,

tick tock, tick tock.

Our hands the same,

as time moves on,

just memories,

her voice is gone,

tick tock, tick tock.

The days slide by,

my treasured piece,

reminds of times,

and death’s release,

tick tock, tick tock.

Each tick from you,

I further slip,

each tock to you,

a step I skip,

tick tock, tick tock.

Tick tock, tick tock,

my mother’s watch,

upon my arm,

tick tock, tick tock.

Sometimes I feel that I am small,

and I don’t matter anymore,

I am so tired I could surely sleep,

for an eternity I would forever weep,

my heart feels heavy, and my mind so dull,

my body aches from a life lived full.

The fight is gone and the flame subdued,

passion’s waned as a life concludes;

once more be young, footloose and free?

I’ve had my day, and it’s not for me.

A Tribute to my Slippers

Everybody needs a pair of these.

Wearing slippers,

is an old bird thing…

For when once young,

naked feet would spring,

through dew grass sweet,

and street baked heat.

As the years soon decline,

bare feet, though sublime,

our child’s heart now subdued,

we reach for comfort of our shoes.

No more feet, wet and wild,

as I did when a child.

Now I groan out of bed,

feeling old and half dead,

toasty toes hit cold floor,

then I crave for the allure,

of my slippers cosy warm,

safe from harm,

of cold chills,

and spikey ills,

that can harm footsies,

or stubbed tootsies.

Yes – I can attest,

that my slippers,

are the best!
