Raven, with her hood down, meditating.

Day eight in the Big Buddha House,

and all is well.

There’s jam on my toast,

and my drink is swell;

and even the rota,

says I’m free ‘til the bell.

Sat on the cushion,

meditation’s not pushin’

my buttons today,

all is calm for a change,

Mental weather is clement,

and nothing to lament,

in the Big Buddha House today.

Prostration – not frustratin’

and the bruise on my knee,

nearly gone thankfully,

and the muscles in my tum’

no longer undone;

I can launch with abandon,

then horizontal to standin’ –

not bad for an old bird like me!

Then the talks – they inspire,

and my mind is on fire,

with ideas and with thoughts,

with a passion they course,

and my heart it does swell,

and I’m leaning as well,

Yes! These things they call ethics,

are quite deep and complex,

let’s leave it at that, just for now…

Oh – the food is sublime,

as I sit down to dine.

Delia is surpassed!

Skilful cooks make repast,

and the smells in the steam,

am I sensing Tajine,

in the Big Buddha House today?

And then there’s our dorm,

floor two, number one,

where sisters in Dharma,

sleep safe, warm, and calm;

and I have to confess

though my bed is a mess,

and my corner’s a state,

we three, are good mates,

in our cosy warm dorm –

floor two, number one.

Day eight in the Big Buddha House,

and all is well.

There’s jam on my toast,

and my drink is swell;

and even the rota,

says I’m free ‘til the bell.

I have the Buddha on my back,

he’s quite an affable chap,

with a candle and a cloth,

and a purpose,

I set off…

The next few poems were written on a poetry day. The first poem is inspired from R.S.V.P. by Beverley Nadin. The task was to write a list of items that we packed to take on our last retreat, and then include some of them in a poem. This was my attempt 🙂

Bell, Virginia Woolf

Three books,

one red, one blue, one black,

Poetry, Dharma and Drama.

A pencil and pen,

backed up with a spare,

(thank God for my Kindle!)

and a brush for my hair.

My potions and pills,

(no nightie with frills)

Just good solid thermals!

Pyjamas and socks

squashed in a bag,

and no need for locks,

as I’m escaping to freedom;

leave humdrum at home.

I’m longing for space,

and a room of one’s own.

Dharma wheel

Dharma wheel (Photo credit: Triratna Photos)

Shattered in pieces,

and thrown on the floor,

cast off the shards,

I’m needing no more.

Pick up the remnants,

still shining with glory,

cherish and nurture,

to conclude the story.

Stick them together,

and fill in the gaps,

with glue of the Dharma,

to fill in the cracks.

Little by little,

polish and buff,

shine with compassion,

but that’s not enough…

Sanding the carcass,

shave off the excess,

contentment and calm,

shows nature’s egress.

Refine the mind,

and open the heart,

continue reflecting,

we’ve made a good start.

I’ve bought my ticket,

I’m going 1st Class!

Setting out on this quest,

on this lives long path.

My past is a story,

an interesting read,

but I’m leaving my baggage,

of which I don’t need.

I look through the window,

recognise all I see,

the Buddha land scenery,

familiar to me.

The weather is clement,

worldly winds have calmed,

the passengers valiant,

Dharma Sister’s at alms.

I’m enjoying the journey,

no rush to get there;

with guide book in hand,

and the wind in my hair!

We stop at the station,

other travellers alight,

we’re sharing this vision,

Enlightenment in sight.

Statue of Buddha in Vietnam

Quiet in the Shrine room

sitting, silent, practising.

Birds call out and sing

the song of the Dharma.

A dog in the distance eulogises.

Sheep call for compassion;

the cows quiet,

contemplating,

ruminating

reflecting.

The rain hits the hollow roof.

The gentle, muffled, shuffle,

Of one who is suffering.

An offering of focus,

clarity and

love.

The singing bowl sings

The candle flickers

The incense spirals

Time for release.
