Tipping Sheep (the right way) was inspired by my son – in celebration of his 18th birthday today, here it is again! If you would like to purchase a paperback copy of my first anthology by the same name, please contact me on worldlywinds@mail.com
With face of delight,
my son runs to me –
I’ve tipped up a sheep,
he shouted with glee.
My face drops with horror.
Well how could this be?
Am I the worst mother,
has he learned nothing from me?
“Calm down Mother!”
my son reassures.
“It’s not as you think,”
with derision he snorts.
“We walked in a field,
(in the group we were five,)
saw a sheep on its back,
with legs waving at sky.
It soon came apparent,
from what we could see,
that the sheep was so stuck,
‘twas a strange sight to see.
We tried hard to lift her,
but to no avail,
she was fat, wet, and smelly,
the weight of a whale.
Then out of the blue,
an idea did occur,
we spread out our groundsheet,
to roll her on there.
With one mighty tug,
we pulled the sheet up,
and the sheep it did tip,
(the right way up!)
So, off with a wobble,
and a, ‘baa,’ of delight,
the sheep she then trotted –
it was quite a sight!
So you see Mum, it’s true,
the things I did say,
we tipped up a sheep.”
(Thankfully – the right way!)

I am so delighted to have won second place in Dagda Publishing’s Homecoming competition.
The write up is spot on too!
I wrote this poem whilst on retreat. Every morning, whilst meditating, the geese would fly off to a nearby lake, and in the evenings I would hear them returning back to their roost. The sight and sound of them was magical and primal.
Towards the end of the retreat I started to think about the journey home. Myself and friends heading back home to Yorkshire, (the North), full of hope, expectation and viewing the world with new eyes.
You can see the full poem by clicking the link below –
Thank you very much to Dagda Publishing for awarding me second place, I am thrilled and giddy! Please take a moment to check out their page as they do showcase some great writers and poets regularly on their site.

From the fall of Troy to the Martian sands, and from microwaves to mammograms, The Wait is a collection of one hundred poems covering a swelling gyre of human, and sometimes less human, experiences, from previously unpublished poets to established veterans of the literary world. The profits from the sales of this independently published volume will go entirely to Cancer Research.
I have a poem, ‘Circle Dance’, in this anthology. Why not treat yourself to a copy. Proceeds go to Cancer Research 🙂

Wow – now that NaPoWriMo14 is at an end I’m feeling a little bereft!
I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who dropped by, read, liked, or left comments. I am stunned to see that my views have now shot up to over 30,800, so thanks everyone for visiting and supporting my page, it is very much appreciated.
I have had a great month visiting the sites of other writers and poets, which has truly entertained and inspired me 🙂
What next?
I will be working on the editing of my second anthology (the clue is in the picture). I have lots of work to sort through to decide which poems make it to the book, and which ones get the chop – never an easy decision! So… if all goes quiet, you will know I am busy wading through poems and consuming copious amounts of biscuits and tea, my sanity kept intact by having my ipod on shuffle.
I will be dropping by from time to time – wish me luck – see you on the other side!
Alex 🙂
